The UN Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza with Majority Approval

Bayan News – The United Nations, with a majority vote, has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and urged Hamas to release Israeli hostages.

The resolution for an immediate ceasefire was put to vote in the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, December 11, and it received 158 votes in favor, 9 against, and 13 abstentions.

Additionally, another resolution regarding the Gaza crisis was adopted, urging Israel to respect the mandate of the UN agency that provides assistance to Palestinian refugees.

Although resolutions passed by the UN General Assembly are not legally binding, they reflect global sentiment towards the conflict.

Currently, around 100 hostages, who were captured during the October 7, 2023, attack, remain held in Gaza. Over 1,000 Israelis were killed in the Hamas attack.

Furthermore, Gaza’s Ministry of Health has reported that more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict that followed the attack.
