UN Official: Prohibition of Women’s Education in Afghanistan Contradicts UN Human Rights

Bayan News – In a recent statement, Yasmin Sharif, a United Nations official, once again criticized the educational restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, deeming it in contradiction with the human rights of the organization.

Ms. Sharif, who is also the Executive Director of the program “Education Cannot Wait,” stated in a press conference on Sunday, September 9th, that the United Nations presents various educational programs in negotiation and coordination with the interim government authorities in Kabul.

The UN official further emphasized the need for extensive involvement of Afghan women in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. She added, “We continue to provide education in some provinces of Afghanistan, which can be in the form of home schools or local agreements negotiated with commanders.”

Previously, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, had stated that the organization would recognize the interim government in Kabul only if they also recognized the rights of women and girls in the country.

However, the interim government authorities have consistently declared their efforts to address this issue and stated that with the provision of a secure environment for education, the doors to schools will be reopened.
