Information of the day: The Financial Times reported on Saturday that the European Union has made its last effort to save the Iranian nuclear deal and break the deadlock.
EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell told the Financial Times he was looking for a “middle way” to end a stalemate that has threatened Europe’s diplomatic efforts for more than a year.
Talks have stalled since March, largely over Iran’s insistence on removing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the US list of foreign terrorist organizations.
The Financial Times reported that Borrell was considering a scenario in which the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would be blacklisted, but that other parts of the organization, which has several arms and a vast trading empire, would remain.
Mr Borrell also said he had asked EU negotiator Enrique Mora to go to Tehran to discuss the issue, but added that Iran was “very reluctant” and called the diplomatic pressure “the last bullet”.
The report also quoted Borrell as saying that the negotiators would not issue an ultimatum to Iran.
Reuters reported last week that Iran’s rulers, emboldened by rising oil prices since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, were in no hurry to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers to ease sanctions on their energy-dependent economies.
According to the IAEA Board in 2015, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.
