Bayannews – 10 May 2022

A group of women and girls protested in the streets of Kabul on Tuesday (May 10th) in connection with the imposition of a mandatory Taliban hijab.

The street protest of women and girls, which took place in the new city of Kabul, was organized by the powerful Afghan women’s movement.

The protesting women and girls staged street protests chanting slogans such as “Afghan women are held captive by the Taliban,” “Afghan people need a piece of bread,” and “Afghan crying child wanders the world.”

They called on the Kabul-based government to reconsider its recent decree.

The Taliban government’s new directive to impose the compulsory hijab has provoked negative reactions domestically and internationally.

The United Nations, the United States, the European Union, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and a number of other countries have reacted to the Taliban’s move, calling for the Taliban to lift restrictions on Afghan women.

Recently, the State Department warned the Taliban that Washington would have the tools to use to put pressure on the Taliban if there were no signs of lifting restrictions on Afghan women and human rights.
