UNAMA Calls for Increased Support for Individuals at Risk

Bayan News – Three days after the targeted killings of Shia civilians in Herat province, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed its concerns and reacted to the incidents.

In a statement on Monday afternoon (December 4th), the organization stated that Afghanistan has witnessed an increase in violence against the Shia community in Kabul, Baghlan, and recently in Herat province.

UNAMA emphasized the need for investigations and accountability for the perpetrators of these events and emphasized that support for individuals at risk must be enhanced.

On Friday, six Shia civilians, including two religious scholars, were targeted and killed by unidentified armed individuals in the Shia-populated district of Jabrail in Herat.

Two weeks prior to that, two Shia religious scholars were also targeted and killed in the city of Herat.

These incidents have sparked criticism, and local residents have called for ensuring the security of the Shia community in the province.
