UNAMA: Authorities should address cases involving women and girls

Bayan News – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is urging the authorities of the caretaker government in Kabul to address cases involving women and girls in accordance with human rights laws.

The agency stated in a recent report released on Friday (December 14) that women and girls in Afghanistan continue to face violence, including murder, sexual assault, domestic abuse, forced marriages, and inheritance deprivation.

This UNAMA report was prepared during the past seven months as a result of discussions with officials of the caretaker government in Kabul and civil society activists.

The report states, “Government officials must establish and clarify the legal framework that ensures the enforcement of justice regarding gender-based violence complaints against Afghan women and girls.”

UNAMA also calls on the caretaker government in Kabul to compel law enforcement and justice institutions to investigate and prosecute crimes under Articles 17 to 21 of the Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, regardless of whether the victims have filed complaints or withdrawn them.
