Restrictions on Ashura Ceremonies; Bennet: Taliban Should Respect Religious Freedom in Afghanistan
Bayan News – Richard Bennet, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, has called on the Taliban to respect religious freedoms in the country.
Bennet made these remarks last night (July 16) in response to the restrictions and disruption of Ashura ceremonies by Taliban forces.
He wrote on the X platform that the Taliban should respect the Muharram rituals, including the display of Ashura symbols.
Bennet wrote on the X platform: “I wish for all that they can observe this important occasion in freedom, security and without fear.”
It is worth noting that Taliban forces in several provinces of Afghanistan, including Kabul and Herat, disrupted the Ashura ceremonies of Hussein and assaulted the mourners.
It has also been reported that the Taliban intelligence in Herat province arrested several photographers for filming the Ashura ceremonies.
