Poverty Crisis in Afghanistan: Over One Million Mothers and Children Deprived of Basic Aid
Bayan News – The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that due to budget shortages, it can only assist one million out of the 12 million people in need in Afghanistan.
In a statement released on Tuesday (October 8), the World Food Programme added that it needs $617 million to maintain its food aid programs until the end of this year.
According to the WFP, due to the budget shortfall and the ongoing financial crisis in Afghanistan, 1.4 million mothers and children in need of emergency assistance are not receiving aid.
The UN-affiliated organization also expressed concern that the food aid distribution, which began after the Taliban took power, is now at risk.
The WFP highlighted that climate change and the environmental crisis in many areas of Afghanistan have destroyed the livelihoods of some of the most vulnerable people. The organization reported that recent heavy rains and floods in some Afghan villages have severely damaged people’s living conditions.
Additionally, the organization noted that thousands of Afghan families have been forcibly deported from Pakistan and have returned to Afghanistan without any resources, lacking adequate opportunities to support and feed their children.
Previously, the WFP announced that nearly four million people in Afghanistan had received cash assistance from the organization this year. The WFP also noted that half of the cash assistance recipients were women.
This comes as the WFP also stated last week that at least 12 million people in Afghanistan do not know where their next meal will come from.
