World Food Programme: Afghanistan Has Become the Epicenter of Global Hunger
Bayan News – The World Food Programme (WFP) has recently announced that Afghanistan has now become the epicenter of global hunger.
Hsiao-Wei Lee, head of the program, stated on Friday (October 18) that approximately 27 million people in Afghanistan do not have access to sufficient food, and families require urgent and sustained food assistance during the winter season.
Additionally, Philipp Kropf, spokesperson for the organization, told the BBC that the WFP needs more than $600 million to continue its operations in Afghanistan for the next six months.
The WFP, referring to the reduction in international aid, added that with the help of the Chinese government, food assistance has been distributed to around 35,000 families across Afghanistan.
Last year, due to a lack of funding, the WFP removed “ten million people” from its list of aid recipients in Afghanistan, and this summer, eleven million more were excluded from assistance, including two million mothers and their children who have not received specialized food to combat malnutrition.
These concerns are raised as winter approaches, and many families, due to poverty and the ongoing economic crisis, are unable to meet their basic needs.
