G20 Calls for Comprehensive Ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon
Bayan News – On Tuesday, November 19, the leaders of the G20 issued a joint statement calling for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.
The group expressed deep concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the intensification of hostilities in Lebanon, emphasizing the urgent need to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and Lebanon.
The joint statement was released at the conclusion of a summit held in Brazil and announced the leaders’ unified support for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.
In their statement, the leaders of the 20 nations declared:
“We support a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735.”
Regarding the conflict in Lebanon, the group also called for a ceasefire to allow citizens of both countries to return to their homes on either side of the Blue Line.
Concern Over Escalating Tensions
In their final statement, the leaders added:
“We express our deep concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalating tensions in Lebanon, highlighting the urgent need to increase humanitarian aid and enhance civilian protection.”
The G20 statement further emphasized:
“Focusing on the human suffering and the negative impacts of the war in the Gaza Strip, we reaffirm our strong commitment to the vision of a two-state solution, where Israel and an independent Palestinian state coexist peacefully within secure and recognized borders, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.”
The G20 leaders’ emphasis on a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon comes as Israel continues to intensify its attacks in both regions.
Despite international efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, tangible results have yet to be achieved.
