Women’s work ban; EU warns of cuts in aid to Afghanistan

Bayan News

The European Union warned Saturday (April 8) that it would reconsider providing assistance if Kabul’s acting government does not reconsider banning women from working in UN institutions.

In a statement, the European Union declared the ban on women working in UN agencies a violation of international law and called on kabul’s acting government to allow women to contribute to humanitarian assistance.

According to the Union, there should be no discrimination by the Kabul government in providing humanitarian assistance to the People of Afghanistan.

“We call on the Taliban to allow women to participate equally and meaningfully in providing assistance and services so that they can fully participate in the community and benefit from this assistance,” the statement said. “Female employees have no replacement.”

The European Union reacted by saying that a few days ago, Kabul’s acting government in a new move banned Afghan women and girls from working in UN offices.

The move by Kabul’s acting government has provoked international reactions.
