Bennett: Publicly Torturing Individuals by the Taliban Must Stop

Bayan News – Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, condemned the flogging of individuals accused by the Taliban.

He wrote last night (June 5) on the X platform: “I once again condemn the widespread public flogging of women, men and children in Sarpol and Ghor on charges of moral crimes.”

The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights continued by writing that this is a violation of Afghanistan’s commitments to prohibit torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading forms of punishment, and must be stopped immediately.

The Taliban publicly flogged 63 people two days ago on charges of theft, illicit relationships, armed assault and fleeing home in the Sarpol provincial stadium.

Among these individuals, 15 were women.
